Confirmed: Erling Haaland has release clause worth in excess of €150m in Manchester City contract

After Manchester City all but confirmed that Erling Haaland would be joining the club on July 1st ahead of the 2022/23 season, rumours have been circulating about a release clause in the player's contract at the Etihad Stadium. Following reports over the past 24 hours, we can now confirm the presence and currently known details of said clause.

In March, we covered a report from the ever-reliable Martin Blackburn of The Sun, who made it known that Team Haaland were expected to ask for a release clause to be written into the contract at his new club.

Of course, that would follow the precedent set in his Borussia Dortmund contract that saw the Premier League champions activate a £51million release, bringing an end to the club's protracted move for a Sergio Aguero replacement.

Yesterday, German outlet Bild reported the presence of a €150million release clause in Haaland's City contract that would come into effect in 2024, which happens to be a year after Karim Benzema's current Real Madrid deal expires.

Following this, James Ducker of The Telegraph later reported the value of the release clause was significantly more than reported by Bild, instead worth between €150million and €200million.

Ducker also reported that all suitors for the Norway international would have had to agree to a release clause as part of any deal as it formed part of the negotiation process, which gives credence to Blackburn's report from March. The Telegraph journalist added that City were entirely relaxed with the inclusion of the release clause.

No information was provided by The Telegraph as to when the clause would come into effect.

This afternoon, Simon Stone of the BBC would also confirm the presence of a release clause in the 21-year-old's contract with Pep Guardiola's side worth in excess of €150million but did not provide a precise date as to when it would activate, only writing that it could be triggered part-way through the contract.

City Report understands that the date provided by Bild regarding when the clause activates is inaccurate, but we too are unsure of the exact date. As soon as this information becomes clear, we strive to inform our followers and readers through our social media platforms and website.
