David Coote appointed as referee for Manchester City vs Liverpool in the Carabao Cup

Finally, after the events of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Manchester City are back in action. The Premier League champions face possibly the toughest test of them all as they welcome Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side to the Etihad in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. The EFL has appointed David Coote as the referee. The game kicks off at 20:00 (GMT) and will be broadcasted live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Thursday evening will be only the fifth time that Coote has refereed Pep Guardiola's side, with the Blues holding a perfect 100% win record when the 40-year-old has taken charge. The wins include a 1-0 win at home against Sheffield United in January of 2021, a 2-0 win away at Crystal Palace towards the end of the 2020/21 season, the 1-0 victory at Brentford last December and finally City's first home game this season – a 4-0 thrashing of Bournemouth.

So far this season, the Nottinghamshire-born referee has taken charge of 11 games, dishing out 26 cards in the process. That's an average of 2.3 a game, however, there have been zero cards in his previous two games – Coote is yet to give out a red card.
