Everything you need to know: Manchester City Internationals – September 2022

After an undefeated start to the season, the first round of international fixtures is here, with one final chance to impress their managers before the World Cup later this year.

Eighteen first-team players from Manchester City will be travelling away this September to represent their countries. Here is a roundup of who is playing when and where:

 

Algeria: Riyad Mahrez


Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez will feature for his nation in two friendlies, having narrowly missed out on World Cup qualification in March.

Argentina: Julian Alvarez


After impressing so far in a sky blue shirt, Julian Alvarez has again been called up to Argentina's squad as they gear up for the World Cup with a pair of friendlies.

Belgium: Kevin De Bruyne


Not surprisingly, Roberto Martinez has once again selected City's No.17 as the Belgium Red Devils compete in the UEFA Nations League.

Brazil: Ederson


After Gabriel Jesus' departure in the summer, Ederson is the only Brazilian left at City. FIFA's No.1 ranked side will play two friendlies as their World Cup preparations continue.

England: John Stones, Kyle Walker, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Cole Palmer (U-21s)


Once again, Gareth Southgate has selected a big pool of City players for his latest England squad. The Three Lions will be playing in the Nations League. City academy graduate Cole Palmer has been selected for the Under-21s.


Kalvin Phillips was also selected but has withdrawn due to impending surgery on a persistent shoulder injury.

Germany: Ilkay Gundogan


Club captain Ilkay Gundogan has been called up for Germany's latest round of Nations League fixtures.

Netherlands: Nathan Ake


After an impressive start to the season, in recent weeks Nathan Ake has lost his place in the City side due to injury but has still been selected for the Netherlands' Nation League games.

September 25 | Netherlands vs Belgium | 19:45 BST

 

Norway: Erling Haaland


One of a select few City that won't be going to the World Cup, Erling Haaland will have a winter off international duty but for now, will be in Norway's squad for September's Nation League games. Haaland could captain the side in the absence of Martin Odegaard, it has been announced.


In other interesting news, Mario Pafundi, first team sport therapist at City, will also be on the Norway medical team after the idea was proposed by Haaland.

Portugal: Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva


Following their narrow qualification for the World Cup, City's Portuguese trio are back representing their country in the Nations League.

Spain: Rodri and Sergio Gomez (U-21s)


Perhaps the best in the world in his position, Rodri will be the only Spaniard from the Blues this break, with Aymeric Laporte missing out through injury and Sergio Gomez not being selected by manager Luis Enrique. Gomez has, however, been selected for U21 duty.

Switzerland: Manuel Akanji


New City recruit Manuel Akanji has impressed in his three appearances so far and will look to continue his good form for his native land in the Nations League.
