Fernandinho set to leave at the end of the season – pre Atletico Madrid Press Conference

Fernandinho was tasked with media duties ahead of Manchester City's visit to the Wanda Metropolitano for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Atletico Madrid, with Pep Guardiola's side taking a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.

The captain revealed that he is unlikely to stay beyond the expiration of his current contract with the Premier League champions as he seeks regular first-team football in Brazil after coming to a decision with his family.

Fernandinho on how difficult Atleti will be:

"It will be difficult, it's a quarter-final, they defend so well, put everyone behind the ball. It will be different at their ground, we have to be ready and create some chances."

Fernandinho on if he will play:

"I'm still hoping, I'll be here every game and training session to be ready."

Fernandinho on winning the Champions League:

"It's the most prestigious competition we are in. It's not easy, I have one more chance and I try to do it."

Fernandinho on his role and if he's surprised that he's not playing as much:

"The same [role] as the last season, not playing much but being there for the players and helping where I can. Sometimes off the pitch and on the pitch. No [not surprised]. It's a great squad, after nine years, maybe after the 2018/19 season where I changed my position [to central defence], it was harder to recover [the position]. With age, it's harder, but I put myself in a position to help the team."

Fernandinho:

"We have to focus on the game, play our football, hurt them with the ball. We'll have chances, we have to take care of the game. It will be a hostile environment. This situation, knockout games, everything can happen."

Fernandinho on the Champions League final loss:

"The final hurt everybody, it was so hard for us. In time, we were so proud to achieve playing in the final, especially the way we played last season. We have a chance to go again. You learn a lot of things in football, being the oldest player in the team, I was capable to guard the team, to keep going and restart this season. The way we started this season we struggled a bit but we keep our shape, our best form and I hope we can get to the final again. Disappointment is part of football, of life. We learn to live that. As I say, we have a chance to go again. We are here again."

Fernandinho on his future:

"No [I'm unlikely to stay beyond the end of the season]. I want to play [regular football]. I will go back to Brazil, for sure. I decided with my family [and have spoken to some people at the club]."
