Joao Cancelo travels to London for Arsenal fixture despite assault at own home
Joao Cancelo has travelled with his Manchester City teammates to London this evening despite being the victim of a burglary and an assault at his own home last night – the full-back's jewellery was stolen, and he was left with facial injuries.
Cancelo took to Instagram last night to announce that 'four cowards' had hurt him and tried to hurt his family, but luckily they were all ok.
In a statement last night, the club said:
"We are shocked and appalled that Joao Cancelo and his family were subjected to a burglary at their home this evening during which Joao was also assaulted.
"Joao and his family are being supported by the club and he is helping the police with their enquiries as they investigate this very serious matter."
Jamie Jackson of The Guardian reported that City staff were at Cancelo's home last night to support him and his family, with a decision as to whether he would travel to London for the Arsenal game to be taken at some time on Friday.
Multiple journalists have today revealed that the Portugal international has made himself available for selection by travelling to London with the rest of the squad – a testament to the 27-year-old's mental fortitude.
Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News reports that Cancelo felt able to make himself available for the match, with City staff happy enough with the checks they made to allow that.
Pep Guardiola will be able to call upon all of his fullbacks after the return of Kyle Walker to training yesterday.
