Julian Alvarez set to sign Manchester City contract extension imminently

Julian Alvarez is set to sign a new and improved Manchester City contract imminently after his rapid rise to superstardom following an impressive debut season in the Premier League and his World Cup triumph with Argentina in Qatar, in which he played a leading role alongside Lionel Messi and co.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that the 23-year-old has approved a new deal from the Premier League champions that will see his contract extended at the club for a further year until 2028, with a significant pay rise following his increased notoriety across the footballing world.

Having excelled during Argentina's triumphant World Cup campaign, the striker enjoyed a remarkable increase in stock which saw him gain around seven million Instagram followers between the World Cup's start and its conclusion – and recently, he placed seventh in The Best FIFA Men's Player 2022 rankings.

With this newfound stature in football, having been signed as an emerging talent but an unknown quantity, albeit with bags of potential, it came as no surprise that reports of a new deal emerged not long into the new year as City are often keen to reward excelling new players with contracts that reflect their status in the game.

There was a suggestion in some quarters that the former River Plate man would look to see an improvement in his club game time before committing to a new deal, with some even suggesting that he would look to move on, as he has found himself to be Erling Haaland's understudy for the most part – but evidently, these claims were wide of the mark with Alvarez set to commit to a new deal at the Etihad Stadium.

Alvarez has scored ten goals and assisted a further three for Pep Guardiola's side after leaving Argentina for Manchester, and has drawn the attention of some of Europe's biggest sides – so his commitment to the club will come as a significant boost for City as they prepare themselves for what looks to be a busy summer of recruitment.
