Riyad Mahrez stars for Algeria – Manchester City International Roundup (08/10/21)

Updated: Oct 9, 2021

Very few Manchester City players were in action today for their national sides, but Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus both played a part in their countries games. Nathan Ake was not selected for the Netherland's squad for today's game. Zack Steffen was an unused sub for the USA.

ALGERIA 6-1 NIGER

Riyad Mahrez took up his usual role for his country with the captain’s armband. If anyone was likely to open the scoring it was the City winger, and he did just that. An impressive 30-yard free-kick fired past the stranded Niger keeper. Standard for Riyad.

A second Algeria goal came via Youssef Oumarou putting the ball into his own net. This was followed up by a Niger goal via Daniel Sosah to put some pressure on the home side.

Once again Riyad Mahrez stepped up and put his country out of reach with a nicely dispatched penalty. Niger then shot themselves in the foot again with Zakariya Souleymane scoring their second own goal of the evening.

Islam Slimani then wrapped up proceedings with a fifth and a sixth goal. Riyad's game came to an end when he was replaced by Mohamed Amoura.

Algeria remain top of Group A, ahead of Burkina Faso on goal difference, as they go 30 games unbeaten.

VENEZUELA 1-3 BRAZIL

Very early in the morning here in the UK, Brazil defeated Venezuela in CONMEBOL qualification. City goalkeeper Ederson spent the whole game on the bench, but Gabriel Jesus played 77 minutes before he was substituted for Antony. Goals from Marquinhos, Gabriel Barbosa and Antony won the game for the away side.
