Manchester City announce first signing of the summer

Manchester City have announced the signing of Scott Carson on a one-year deal following the expiration of his Derby County contract.

In January, Pep Guardiola highlighted the importance of Scott Carson's leadership behind the scenes, describing the third-choice goalkeeper as 'another captain':

"We have one player, one keeper that is so important for us and that is Scott Carson. He is like a captain behind the scenes, like Fernandinho. He is not noticed in the papers or on the field because he is the third keeper but in the locker room, he is like another captain. He is so important and hopefully, he can stay longer with us in the next years."

Later that month, it was reported by Matt Hughes of Mail Sport that City were left infuriated with Derby as the Championship club blocked the Premier League champions from signing the 35-year-old for free that window as they were unwilling to cancel their loan agreement because they needed the £500,000 due that month to pay the overdue wages of other Derby players – with Wayne Rooney's side struggling financially.

However, City finally have their man six months later, with Carson being the first senior arrival this summer – joining on a free transfer after his Derby contract expired.

Speaking to the club website, Carson said:

"It’s a pleasure and a privilege to be part of the setup here at City. To be around Pep and his backroom staff is fantastic and I feel I have learnt so much since I joined in 2019. The lads made me feel at home straight away and I have loved every second of my two years here. To commit for another year was such an easy decision. I want to continue pushing the other goalkeepers we have here and I want to make sure my experience rubs off on them."

Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said:

"Scott brings a wealth of knowledge to the squad. He is a former international goalkeeper who has played in lots of big games during a long career. We know he is always ready to play if we need to call upon him. The lads love him, and I know his experience has been a huge help to Ederson and Zack Steffen."
