Several Manchester City players were in world cup qualification action for their countries tonight. It was positive news for the England, German and Algerian lads, but a night to forget for the Spanish boys. The England game was marred by racist chanting.
Hungary 0-4 England
Raheem Sterling continued his sublime England form as he bagged a goal and an assist as England silenced the haters in Hungary. Jack Grealish provided an assist before he was substituted in the 88th minute. John Stones made his 50th England appearance in the win. He and Kyle Walker earned a clean sheet and played a full 90 minutes. England remain top of Group I; four points clear of Poland. The racist chanting present at this game has no place in the world and we hope UEFA take the zero-tolerance stance they promised.
Liechtenstein 0-2 Germany
Ilkay Gundogan completed 73 minutes in Germany’s comfortable win over Liechtenstein. Ex-City player Leroy Sane scored Germany’s second. Germany are second place in Group J behind Armenia after four games.
Sweden 2-1 Spain
It was a night to forget for City’s Spanish players. Sweden took top spot in Group B with a shock 2-1 win. Ferran Torres and Aymeric Laporte started the game. Rodri took a place on the bench but entered the match after 85 minutes. Spain are in second place in the group.
Laporte pulled off a great last-ditch tackle in the 77th minute to prevent Spain from potentially going down three goals to one.
Algeria 8-0 Djibouti
Riyad Mahrez and Algeria ran riot against ten-man Djibouti, scoring six goals with two goals and an assist being provided by the City winger. Algeria are top of Group A in the CAF Qualification second round after one game. Riyad Mahrez played the full 90 minutes.
