Reports: Patrick Roberts to join Sunderland AFC on loan
Patrick Roberts is set to join Sunderland on loan for the remainder of the season according to Sky Sports.
The 24-year-old has been on loan this season at fellow City Football Group club Troyes in France. However, after 20 league games, Roberts has only managed one appearance, which was a 13-minute cameo against Lyon. Troyes are currently in 17th place in Ligue 1.
Reports from French outlet L’Est Eclair were the first to report that Roberts was expected to return to England.
James Copley of the Sunderland Echo reported earlier today that Wigan were attempting to fight for his signature.
Sunderland are currently 2nd in League One, just one point off of Wycombe.
With Roberts’ contract set to expire at the end of the season, that will likely mark the end of his City career. The former Fulham winger was being touted as the “English Messi” when he joined Manchester City, and at first, there were sparks of potential.
Roberts had an impressive loan spell at Celtic, spending three years in Glasgow with 18 goals and 26 assists in 78 appearances during Brendan Rodgers time as manager.
However, the following seasons saw him rarely make an impact when on loan at Girona, Norwich City, Middlesborough and Derby. Roberts is set to turn 25 in February and will likely be in need of finding a new club come summertime.
