Romanian referee István Kovács to take charge of City's trip to Brugge

István Kovács has been appointed referee for City's third Champions League group stage match this season, as they make the short trip to Belgium to face Club Brugge on Tuesday 19 October.

ISTVAN KOVACS

The Romanian man in the middle has never taken charge of a Manchester City first team game, although he was in Manchester last season to oversee a Europa League game between United and Spanish side Granada. Kovács actually did referee a UEFA Youth League match way back when - over seven years ago - when City's U19 team beat Bayern 4-1 in 2014, with the infamous left-back who returned for a short spell two seasons ago, Angeliño getting on the score sheet. He will be reunited with a few familiar faces having refereed his fair share of international matches - including a England Nations League game - but he's a new face as far as City are concerned.
