Sergio Aguero expected to be offered club ambassador role

Manchester City are preparing to offer Sergio Aguero a role as a club ambassador just weeks after his early retirement, according to reports from the always reliable Martin Blackburn.

The 33 year-old was forced to retire on December 16 after a heart condition had been discovered just months after leaving Manchester CIty to join Barcelona on a free.

Aguero’s condition was revealed on October 30 after the striker had difficulty breathing in a match against Alaves. It capped off a difficult spell for the Argentinian who only had five appearances for the Spanish side, totalling 165 minutes. Aguero had been side-lined for most of the past two years recovering from a torn meniscus, as well as calf and hamstring injuries.

In the past few weeks there have been various reports out of both Argentina and Spain regarding the future of City’s record goal scorer. Argentinian outlet Ole were the first to report on the possibility of Aguero taking on a global ambassador role, with Spanish outlet Marca reporting that the he had multiple coaching staff roles in his home country.

However, Aguero has been on holiday in South America since his retirement, so City may have to wait to hear back from their club legend. While City currently employ a few former players in various roles, Mike Summerbee is currently the lone club ambassador.

The club ambassador role is ambiguous, some teams have players involved in foundations, while others use the platform as a token of respect. But with tens of millions of social media followers and one of the largest followings on Twitch, Aguero will likely be used in a variety of roles to help raise awareness around the club.

Last spring City announced that Aguero will have a statue built for him, joining former teammates David Silva and Vincent Kompany who’s statues were unveiled this past summer.
