Southampton closing in on Gavin Bazunu signing from Manchester City in £10m plus deal

Gavin Bazunu is set to join Southampton on a permanent deal from Manchester City after negotiations between the clubs over a two week period excelled, with a deal now close to being completed.

This afternoon, it was reported by Adrian Kajumba and Jack Gaughan of the Daily Mail that Southampton were hoping to sign Bazunu in a deal worth up to £10million, with the Saints looking to replace Fraser Forster, who has made a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Bazunu has made 44 League One appearances for Portsmouth on loan in the 21/22 season, showcasing his impressive shot-stopping skills. The 20-year-old has also been noticed internationally by Ireland supporters, who applaud his goalkeeping abilities after making 10 appearances at the senior level for his country.

This evening, it was reported by Dan Sheldon and Oliver Kay at The Athletic that Bazunu is on the verge of signing for Southampton in a deal expected to exceed £10million when potential add-ons are considered.

It is understood by Alex Crook of talkSPORT that City offered the Irish international a ‘big pay rise’ hoping he would sign a new long-term deal at the Premier League champions. However, this was seemingly rejected by the player due to his ambitions of being a number one goalkeeper in England's top flight – and with a Premier League side in Southampton asking for his services, it was likely difficult to turn down.

However, City have insisted on a significant buyback option in the deal according to Crook for the future if Bazunu were to return to the club, with James Ducker of The Telegraph revealing that the club would also insert a sell-on clause in any deal.
